The Demise of Ayatollah Hashemi Rafsanjani,

the Great Man of the Iranian Nation

The Embassy of the Islamic Republic of Iran in Copenhagen announces with deep regret and profound sadness the passing away of Ayatollah Hashemi Rafsanjani, a great icon of the Islamic Republic of Iran, on Sunday 8 January 2017 at the age of 82.

Ayatollah Ali Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani (1934 - 2017) played a key role during the anti-dictatorship struggles in Iran. He was arrested several times and served prison terms before the victory of the Islamic Revolution in 1979. After the Revolution he helped found the Islamic Republic of Iran and remained an  prominent figure in Iranian politics until his death.

Throughout his long and distinguished career Mr. Rafsanjani served in all important positions in Iran including as Second-in-Command of Irans Joint Chiefs of Staff during the eight years of the Iraq-imposed war (1980-88), Speaker of the Parliament (1980 - 1989), President of the Islamic Republic (1989 - 1997), Chairman of the Assembly of Experts (2007 -2011), and Chairman of the Expediency Council (1989 - 8 January 2017).

Ayatollah Rafsanjani was a long-standing and dedicated religious and political  personality who remained committed to the lofty ideals of the Islamic Revolution and  endeavored enthusiastically towards the realization of justice, freedom, independence and development.

He was the architect of post-war reconstruction, an advocate of progressive  policies, a promoter of friendly relations, especially with Irans neighbours, and a pioneer for the peoples empowerment.

The great man of the country, symbol of unabated efforts and a long-time servant of the nation, will be sorely missed by all Iranians and many people across the globe. May he rest in peace and God bless his soul.

To honour the memory and services of this unique figure in Iranian contemporary history, the Government of the Islamic Republic of Iran has declared three days of national mourning. In this connection, a book of condolence will be open at the Iranian Embassy in Copenhagen, 48 Svanemøllevej, 2100 København Ø on:

Tuesday 10 January 2017        14:00 - 16:00

Wednesday 11 January 2017   10:00 - 14:00

Thursday 12 January 2017      10:00 - 14:00
